Study Questions for Chapter 1-American Journey

1) Create a chart with a list of Native Americans according to each region. For this chart give dates (if possible) for the raise and fall of the group. Also, include major achievements of each group. 


Arctic: Yupik, Inupiat, Inuit.  Subarctic: Tanaina, Cree, Ojibway, Onondaga. 


Northwest Coast: Ottawa, Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Winnebago, Sauk, Fox, Miami, Huron, Seneca,  Narraganset, Mohegan, Miami, Shawnee, Builders. 


Plateau: Yakima, Palus, Nez Perce, Walla Walla. Great Basin: Paiute,  Northern Paiute.


 Southwest: Navajo, Hopi, Papago, Zuni, Apache, Commanche.


California: Pomo, Chumash. 


Great Plains: Blackfoot, Crow, Mandan, Sioux, Cheyenne, Omaha, Pawnee,  Osage, Pueblo, Zuni, Wichita, Mound, Chicksaaw, Apache, Comanche.  


  
2) What is your general impression of the Americas before the arrival of Columbus? 


Had a relatively large amount of native americans and various tribes. 

3) What groups formed the Iroquois League? When was this group formed and for what reason? 


The Onandaga,  the Seneca,  the Mohawk, the Oneida, and the Cayuga.

4) What are hieroglyphics? What Native groups used them? 
a stylized picture of an object representing a word, syllable, or sound, as found in ancient Egyptian and other writing systems.


5) What type of dwelling was common among the people of the Southwest?


Teepees 

6) What was the first crop raised by Native Americans in Mexico? 
Maize

He explored and travelled on them.
